The film, which is inspired by true events, explores Britain’s long and violent journey toward granting women the right to vote in the early 20th century. Directed by Sarah Gavron, “Suffragette” reunites Streep with her “Iron Lady” screenwriter Abi Morgan. The intense drama, which also stars Helena Bonham Carter, centers on Maud (Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is upended when she joins the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement, which heads underground following increased police aggression. “Suffragette” will open the 59th BFI London Film Festival on October 7.
