Amazon to pay e-book authors based on page reads during trial

PanARMENIAN.Net - Amazon is launching a publishing experiment that will see e-book authors earn royalties based solely on the number of pages their readers get through, Digital Spy reports.

Writers who publish through the KDP Select Programme will be compensated based on how their books fare on the Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Lending Library services.

They will be paid for each page that remains open on a Kindle device long enough for it to have been read in its entirety, according to The Atlantic.

The scheme aims to encourage writers to deliver page-turners and address claims that authors who write longer books are being short-changed under the current system.

"We're making this switch in response to great feedback we received from authors who asked us to better align payout with the length of books and how much customers read," said Amazon in a statement to authors.

"Under the new payment method, you'll be paid for each page individual customers read of your book, the first time they read it."

The trial will begin on July 1.
