Samsung mass producing chips “to pave way for 6GB phones”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Samsung is mass producing a new smartphone chip that it claims will pave the way for mobile devices with up to 6GB of memory, according to Digital Spy.

The Korean firm is churning out its 12Gb (1.5GB) DDR4 RAM modules, which will allow handsets to pack up to twice as much memory as they can currently handle.

This could usher in flagship smartphones with up to 6GB of memory, or compact devices with 3GB of RAM that make no concessions on the specs front.

The components are said to be 30% faster than Samsung's 8Gb chips, used by 4GB devices like the Galaxy Note 5, and up to twice as quick as the DDR4 RAM in PCs.

Perhaps most importantly, the chips are 20% more power efficient, so smartphones that use them may avoid taking a battery hit.

With production under way on the components, it might not be long before they start finding their way to smartphones.
