Elizabeth Banks in talks to direct

PanARMENIAN.Net - Sony is aiming to reboot "Charlie's Angels" franchise with Elizabeth Banks in talks to direct, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The "Pitch Perfect 2" director will also serve as producer alongside her husband and producing partner Max Handelman. The studio is still searching for a writer to tackle the reboot.

The reboot will be third incarnation of the franchise which started with the hit television series in the 1970s starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. The series follows three female detectives who worked to solve cases for a mysterious benefactor named Charlie, while also joshing with their sidekick, Bosley.

As the cast was frequently changed and the ratings were declining, the series was cancelled in 1981 but revived with a hit movie in 2000 directed by McG starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Bill Murray. It was followed up with a sequel titled "Charlie's Angels: Full Throtle" in 2003.

An attempt to revive the franchise as television series in 2011 only lasted four episodes.

Elizabeth will next direct YA fantasy "Red Queen" at Universal.
