124 documentaries to vie for Oscar this year

PanARMENIAN.Net - The field of contenders in the Oscar race for Best Documentary Feature will consist of 124 films, the Academy announced on Friday, October 23, according to TheWrap.

The number is fewer than last year’s 134 entries. The record was set two years ago with 151.

Members of the Academy’s Documentary Branch have received screeners of all the qualifying films, and are each randomly assigned a certain number of films to watch. Beyond the required viewing, members are free to see as many of the qualifying films as they can.

Voters have until the third week of November to view the films and cast ballots for their favorites. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced at the beginning of December, with a second round of voting producing the final five nominees.

Nominations will be announced on January 14, with the 88th Academy Awards taking place on Feb. 28.
