Bold Films backs Jake Gyllenhaal’s Boston Marathon bombing movie

PanARMENIAN.Net - Bold Films will produce and fully finance Jake Gyllenhaal’s Boston Marathon bombing project “Stronger”, Variety reports.

David Gordon Green came on board last year to direct and Gyllenhaal signed on to star as bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs in the 2013 attack. John Pollono wrote the script for the project, based on the book by Bauman and Bret Witter about the attack and its aftermath.

“Stronger” had originally been set up at Lionsgate, which will remain the distributor.

Under the deal with Bold Films, Gyllenhaal has also become a producer on the film along with Bold’s Michael Litvack, Scott Silver and original producers Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville Films. Executive producers are Riva Marker, Peter McGuigan, Anthony Mattero and Gary Michael Walters.

Bold previously teamed with Gyllenhaal on 2014’s “Nightcrawler.”

Bauman was waiting for his girlfriend at the finish line of the marathon when two pressure-cooker bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others. When Bauman awoke the next day after surgeries and realized he could not speak, he asked for a pad and paper and wrote: “Saw the guy. Looked right at me.”

That set off a massive manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was convicted of the murders in April. The book, published in 2014, also describes Bauman’s attempts to walk again and face his new circumstances with grace, transforming from an aimless deli counter worker to a man driven with ambition and full of love.

“Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany will play Bauman’s girlfriend.

Gyllenhaal signed a first-look deal with Bold Films in August to launch his Nine Stories production banner with Marker. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
