VH1 to adapt hip-hop movie “The Breaks” as TV series

PanARMENIAN.Net - These. Are. “The Breaks” — TV series edition. VH1 is adapting its own original hip-hop movie “The Breaks” for a TV series slated to premiere in late 2016, TheWrap said.

“‘The Breaks’ is VH1 at its best, intersecting 90s nostalgia with hip hop for the masses,” said Chris McCarthy, general manager of VH1. “Both the viewers and critics have spoken, and we couldn’t be happier to continue telling the story that has already connected with millions of pop culture fans.”

The film scored 2.6 million total viewers across back-to-back airings in January. Among adults 18-49, that ranks it as the No. 2 cable original movie of 2016 to date.

Inspired by Dan Charnas’ book “The Big Payback,” a narrative history of the hip-hop business, “The Breaks” was written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann. The TV movie followed three young friends fulfilling their hip hop dreams in New York City in 1990.

In addition to story adapters Mann and Charnas, Bill Flanagan and Maggie Malina are executive producers on the upcoming TV series.

“The Breaks” is the name of a 1980 hit single by emcee Kurtis Blow.
