Artworks by Salvador Dali lead Ahlers & Ogletree's March sale

PanARMENIAN.Net - A circa 1775 English George III satinwood marquetry demilune console, two artworks by the renowned Venezuelan artist Jesus Rafael Soto, a large sculpture by the iconic surrealist Salvador Dali and two 18th century English portraits by a follower of John Hayls are a few of the nearly 900 lots that will come up for bid March 5th-6th at Ahlers & Ogletree in Atlanta, Art Daily reports.

The auction will be held in Ahlers & Ogletree’s showroom, at 715 Miami Circle (Suite 210), starting at 11 a.m. Eastern time both days. Previews will be held Monday thru Wednesday, Feb. 29th-March 2nd, from 10-6; on Thursday, March 3rd, from 10-6 (with an extended evening preview from 6-9 p.m., one where light refreshments will be served); and on Friday, March 4, from 10-2.

Sold will be fine art, antiques, furniture, lighting, mirrors, jewelry, hand-woven rugs and carpets, collectibles, art glass and crystal, sculpture, Russian silver and enamel, Georg Jensen sterling silver, porcelain, Japanese woodblock prints, Chinese porcelain, pottery and decorative arts, modern and contemporary art and design, and more. The doors will open both days at 10 a.m.

The 18th century George III demilune (half-round) console was made in England after a design by Robert Adam. The beautiful and heavily carved piece, 34 inches tall by 46 inches wide, has an elaborately inlaid cross-banded top and conforming frieze, all raised on square tapered legs. It was previously sold at Sotheby’s in London in 1989 and Sotheby’s in New York City in 1998.

Jesus Rafael Soto (1923-2005) was active and lived in Venezuela and France. He was one of the most prominent representatives of the Op Art-Kinetic Art movements, and his work exuded high energy, often using metal. Sold will be a painted metal on wood relief sculpture, signed and numbered (64/175), titled Homenaje al Humano (1975); and a silkscreen on Plexiglas with metal rods titled Tes azules y negras (1979), verso signed and numbered (32/110), and 19 ¾ inches tall.

The Spanish surrealist master Salvador Dali (1904-1989) needs no introduction. Offered will be a patinated and partially polished bronze creation titled Nobility of Time, conceived in 1977 and first cast in 1984. The signed and numbered (81/350) sculpture, 23 ¼ inches tall (including base), shows a crowned melting clock at the center, atop a tree trunk, with an angel and a female nude.

The two 18th century portrait paintings attributed to a follower of the British artist John Hayls (1600-1679) are titled Michael Wharton Esq. Son in Law of John first Lord Poulett and Susanna daughter of John first Lord Poulett and Wife of Michael Wharton Esq. of Beverly in Yorkshire, a couple from the noble class of Great Britain. Each measures 53 inches by 42 ½ inches, framed.

A limited edition (#7 of 9) bronze sculpture by the Russian-French artist known as Erte (real name: Romain de Tirtoff, 1892-1990), titled In the Evening and depicting an Art Deco-style standing female draped in a green gown decorated with gold feathers, 20 inches tall, will come up for bid, as will a life-size bronze statue of a standing Bodhisattva Guan Yin from the Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), impressive at 68 inches tall, with an incised seal mark on the back.

The clock category will be highlighted by an American-made Luman Watson (Cincinnati, Ohio, active 1819-1834) Federal Masonic stained oak and cherry tall case weight-driven clock with swan’s neck pediment accented by three urn form finials above a hand-painted dial, 98 inches tall. Also sold will be a second quarter 19th century British Royal Household mobile manual hand pump fire engine (or fire extinguisher) in red painted iron, wood, copper iron and glass.

Returning to fine art, a limited edition (#56 of 200) portfolio of works by the noted artist Georgia O’Keeffe (Am., 1887-1986), titled Georgia O’Keeffe: A Studio Book, comprising 108 full color plates of her work, plus black and white photos of the artist and signed by her on the limitation page, will come up for bid; as will a watercolor on paper laid down on board by English painter Helen Allingham (1848-1926), titled A Village Scene, signed and showing a home with figures.

Other artworks will feature an oil on canvas painting by the French-born American painter Jean de Botton, (1898-1978), titled Le Char du Soleil (1960), a signed abstract figural work with a Cubist rendering of a scene of Helios and the chariot of the sun; and a large, hand-blown Murano glass sculptural charger (or disc), by the Italian artist Lino Tagliapietra (b. 1934), titled Saturno, internally decorated and of a concentric form, signed, dated (1987) and numbered (#23 of 100).

Additional lots will include a Chinese famille verte vase, an 18th century buffet a deux corps (two-bodied buffet), a pair of French silvered bronze andirons, two Chinese Wisteria bowls, a pair of cold patinated bronze pug dogs, a Chinese Meiping vase and Tianqiuping vase, a 19th century Venetian marble-top console, a birdcage automaton, a 19th century secretaire a abattant (French fall-front writing desk), a Chinese Export bird on stand and a Chinese porcelain plaque.

Also sold will be artworks by Jules Gontran Lejouteux, Hippolyte Michaud, David Bierk and Worthington Whittredge; a 30-plus-piece Meissen tea or coffee service, an Italian giltwood armchair, a 19th century Adams-style settee, a pair of Chinese lacquered cabinets, a Roycroft copper lamp, a 19th century French bronze clock, a sterling tea service and a Tree of Life rug.
