“Doraemon” wins second straight weekend at Japanese box office

PanARMENIAN.Net - Toho’s “Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan 2016,” the 36th entry in the Doraemon feature animation series, won its second straight weekend at the Japanese box office. In the March 12-13 frame the film earned $4.27 million on 415,000 admissions, pushing its cumulative ticket sales total to 1.07 million. Numbers are set to increase as Japanese schoolkids start their spring break next week, Variety reports.

Ranking at number two was Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur,” which took $2.08 million on 192,000 admissions from 380 screens. This was about 58% of the opening weekend haul of “Inside Out,” which finished with $35 million last year in Japan.

Bowing in the number three slot was “Everest: The Summit of the Gods,” the first Japanese feature to be shot on Mount Everest. Directed by Hideyuki Hirayama and co-distributed by Toho and Asmik Ace, the film opened on 322 screens and recorded $1.84 million on 165,000 admissions. The forecast is for a final total of $13 million.
