Euronest PA adopts four pro-Armenian reports: delegation chief

PanARMENIAN.Net - In its fifth plenary session last week, the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly adopted four reports, all in Armenia's best interests, the leader of the national delegation said, according to Tert.am.

“The reports do not contain any clauses with unacceptable implications; they are fully acceptable and reflect Armenia’s interests and objectives,” the ruling Republican Party member Artak Zakaryan told reporters in Yerevan.

“We primarily aim to avoid generalized wordings related to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. What trying to neutralize all approaches allowing for a discriminatory attitude to any partner country in Euronest,” he said, adding that the Armenian delegation had reservations about certain provisions that contradicted Russia’s interests.

“Some points addressing Armenia too, our delegation voted against those proposals,” Zakaryan said.

He added that the report, covering general positions and concerns about the security and foreign policy threats to the EU countries and member states of the Eastern Partnership Program, contained many provisions on the need to reach a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

“The trilateral [deals] in particular, including the ceasefire agreement signed on May 12, 1994, distinctively highlight the need to reach a political solution through a peaceful settlement and a dialogue between presidents. Also, they condemn the closed borders between Turkey and Armenia,” said the delegation’s leader.

The Azerbaijani delegation, which had earlier submitted an appeal refusing to participate in the Assembly’s hearings, did not attend the plenary session.

Tevan Poghosyan from the opposition Heritage party, an active member of the delegation also attending the news conference, said that they had prepared a special report for the Azerbaijani colleagues to urge them to avoid ceasefire violations on the frontline as well as hate speech. According to Poghosyan, the delegation succeeded in its efforts to exclude the Nagorno Karabakh conflict from the Euronest agenda (given that the OSCE Minsk Group is the only international mission mandated to act as a peaceful mediator between Armenia and Azerbaijan).

“We have agreed to rule out any wording that would undermine the Nagorno Karabakh peace process; that was our key goal, and perhaps our key achievement too,” he added.

“Armenia respected and attended the [Assembly’s] plenary session in Baku, whereas Azerbaijan did not attend [the session] in Yerevan. Azerbaijan has submitted a withdrawal notice, realizing that it cannot push ahead with its agenda in that format. So we can reiterate that Euronest will be dedicated to the reforms program, integration of EU institutions, dissemination of EU values, and cooperation,” he added.
