No details on her character as plotlines are being kept under wraps, but the episode, titled “Hated in the Nation,” will be directed by James Hawes. Created and written by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror taps into our collective unease with the modern world and each stand-alone episode is a suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia. The original series, which aired for two seasons on UK’s Channel 4, received an international Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Rose D’Or and was nominated for a BAFTA. In addition to her long run on Boardwalk Empire, Macdonald’s other TV credits include The Girl in the Cafe, State of Play miniseries and Ricky Gervais’ Special Correspondents. Her upcoming film credits include Swallows and Amazons with Rafe Spall for Studio Canal (UK) and HanWay Films, and Bronwen Hughes’ indie The Journey is the Destination with Maria Bello.
