Karabakh talks to restart only after appropriate conditions created: FM

PanARMENIAN.Net - Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian refuted the information that an agreement on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement will be approved at a meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani top officials, expected to take place in June.

Addressing the parliament on Thursday, May 26, Nalbandian said issues known to everyone were discussed at the meeting in Vienna.

President Serzh Sargsyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev met in Vienna on May 16, with mediators from France, Russia and the United States also participating in the summit.

“The statement by the foreign policy chiefs of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairing countries cites the importance of adhering to the 1994 ceasefire, also weighing in on the establishment of investigative mechanisms in Nagorno Karabakh and the expansion of the existing Office of the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office,” Panorama.am cited Nalbandian as saying.

According to him, next month’s possible meeting is aimed at renewing the negotiation process.

“Obviously, appropriate conditions should be created for renewal of talks,” Nalbandian said.

“If investigative and monitoring mechanisms are deployed, the Office of the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office is expanded, and the recurrence of violence is ruled out, negotiations may restart.”

The Minister did not exclude separate meetings between the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs and the Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers in June.
