Armenia not surrendering land without Karabakh recognition: ruling party

PanARMENIAN.Net - Vice chairwoman of Armenia's ruling Republican party Hermine Naghdalyan on Thursday, July 28 denied rumors of the party's intention to cede the buffer zone around Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijan.

"The Republican party won't ever surrender those lands without a change in Karabakh's status, without recognition of Karabakh's independence," Naghdalyan said.

Asked about the demands of the armed group that have been holding a police department for already 12 days, Naghdalyan said the ruling party's passiveness over the last two weeks was conditioned upon the wish "to not harm the fragile process of negotiations."

The group are members of the Sasna Tsrer movement. One police officer was killed, and several more were wounded in a shootout that broke as the members of the group hit the gates of the police department with a track. All the captives have been set free. Also, they want the authorities to halt Karabakh negotiations fearing they are going to cede the land around the formerKarabakh Autonomous Oblastto Azerbaijan.

Failing to characterize the group as terrorists, the official said that no one in Armenia should try to solve questions by the use of force.
