Wrestler Artur Aleksanyan snatches first gold for Armenia in Rio

PanARMENIAN.Net - Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan won the first gold medal for Team Armenia on Tuesday, August 16, as he defeated Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera from Cuba in the final round of the competition at the Rio Olympics.

Earlier, he became a two-time world champion, three-time European Champion and an Olympic bronze medalist.

As he received the medal, Aleksanayan wore a shirt with the image of Robert Abajyan, the Armenian serviceman who was killed during the 4-day war in April.

This is Armenia's first Olympic gold medal since 1996 and the country's second gold medal all-time. The previous gold also came in wrestling.
