PanARMENIAN.Net - Well Go USA Entertainment has bought North American distribution rights to Xiaogang Feng’s “I am Not Madame Bovary,” starring Fan Bingbing, Guo Tao, and Da Peng, Variety reports.
The film premiered at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival on Sept. 8. Well Go USA has committed to a theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada on Oct. 7, which follows the wide release in China on Sept. 30.
The film is based on Liu Zhenyun’s 2012 novel “I Did Not Kill My Husband” and his adapted screenplay, a satirical story of a village woman accused of being an adulterer. After a ruling is made against her in her divorce case, she begins an annual ‘”journey of petition” to Beijing in order to prove that her divorce was a sham, and to redeem her reputation.
“ ‘I am Not Madame Bovary is a powerful and innovative film starring one of China’s most acclaimed actresses under the direction of a true master,” said Well Go USA Entertainment president & CEO Doris Pfardrescher. “This is a transformative role for Fan Bingbing and one which we think will translate with North American audiences.”
The film is presented by Sparkle Roll Media Corp., Huayi Brothers Media Corp., Beijing Skywheel Entertainment, Huayi Brothers Pictures and Zhejiang Dongyang Mayla Media with Qi Jianhong, Wang Zhongjun, Song Ge, and Wang Zhonglei. The film is produced by Zhang Dajun; executive produced by Wang Zhonglei, Zhou Maofei, Zhao Lei and Jerry Ye; and co-produced by Wang Yang, Joe Tam and Hu Xiaofeng.
Feng’s credits include “Aftershock,” “Back to 1942” and “If You Are the One.” Fan’s credits include “Skiptrace,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Buddha Mountain.”
The deal was negotiated by Well Go USA Entertainment’s Pfardrescher and Golden Network’s Clarence Tang, who is spearheading Asian sales, along with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch is handling Europe.
