Newcomer Cailee Spaeny tapped to portray female lead in “Pacific Rim 2”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Universal Pictures and Legendary's "Pacific Rim 2" is moving forward as it is expected to begin production soon. As AceShowbiz reports citing Variety, newcomer Cailee Spaeny has been tapped to portray the female lead in the sequel to "Pacific Rim".

The actress/pop singer will star alongside "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actor John Boyega and "Suicide Squad" star Scott Eastwood. Details about Spaeny's as well as Eastwood's character are still kept under wraps, but it's been confirmed that the lead actor, Boyega, will portray the son of Stacker Pentecost, a character played by Idris Elba in the first movie.

The film will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight from a script co-written by Guillermo del Toro, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder and Travis Beacham. This will be the first Blockbuster movie that DeKnight's directing, after he wrote for and directed TV shows which included "Daredevil" and "Smallville".

Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni and del Toro will produce the film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns through their production company, Upper Room Entertainment. Cale Boyter exec-produces the project that will begin this November in Australia for a February 23, 2018 release in U.S. theaters.

Spaeny previously showed up in indie film "Counting to 1.000" and has a single called "Fallin" on iTunes. She recently wrapped up filming on "The Shoes" in which she stars alongside Erika Bierman ("The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1") and Christina Lambert ("Goat").
