Armenia 72nd globally for number of internet usersSeptember 20, 2016 - 13:40 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia has improved its positions in terms of Internet penetration among individual users, mounting to the 72nd spot among 191 countries (58.25% of individuals using the Internet in the country) against last year’s 88th position (46.3%), a UN report said. According to the 2016 edition of The State of Broadband report released recently by the UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, Azerbaijan is far ahead of Armenia on the 36th spot globally, while, Turkey, Georgia and Iran lag behind in the 82nd, 99th and 103rd positions, respectively. Russia is in the 43rd spot, while the United States comes in 40th. Issued annually, The State of Broadband report is a unique global snapshot of broadband network access and affordability. The Broadband Commission presents this report to explore the role that broadband plays in underpinning inclusive and sustainable development, and the necessary framework conditions to enable affordable, universal and available Internet access to be achieved. The consideration of the same indices among developing countries revealed, however, that Armenia ranks the 30th, up from last year's 35th. In terms of fixed broadband Internet per 100 inhabitants, Armenia's index is 9.58 (84th globally), while the index of mobile broadband in the country stands at 41.29 (91th). According to the International Telecommunications Union's latest price research, a monthly fixed broadband package cost 1.7% of average income in developed countries, compared with 31% of average income in developing countries, and 64% of average income in Africa. Mobile broadband cost 1-2% of monthly income in developed countries, compared with 11-25% of monthly average income in developing countries. For transition economies, the World Bank notes that, when taking into consideration the distribution of income in countries, over 80% of the population in countries like Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia would need to spend more than 10% of their household expenditure to afford a basic mobile plan. The ITU estimates suggest that there will be 3.5 billion people online by the end of 2016, but more than half the world’s population (some 3.9 billion people) will still be offline, and unable to connect regularly, if at all. Globally, the total number of active mobile-broadband subscriptions is expected to exceed 3.6 billion by end 2016, up from 3.2 billion at end 2015. Moreover, there will be 884 million fixed broadband subscriptions by end 2016, up 8% on the previous year, which ended with 820 million fixed broadband subscriptions.
