“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” tops foreign box office

PanARMENIAN.Net - “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” topped the foreign box office, racking up $42.5 million and bolstering the expensive fantasy film’s chances of turning a profit, Variety reports.

The adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ best-seller about a school for superhuman children cost $110 million to produce and millions more to market. It has only been a modest performer in the U.S., where it has earned $51.1 million. Fox backed the film, enlisting Tim Burton of “Batman” and “Alice in Wonderland” fame to direct, with the hopes of creating a new young adult franchise.

It’s too early to tell if those ambitions will be realized, but overseas crowds have been receptive. “Miss Peregrine’s” showed on 12,187 screens in 75 international markets this weekend, opening to $5.8 million in Russia, $5.4 million in France, and racking up $5.9 million in its second weekend in South Korea. Globally, “Miss Peregrine’s” has grossed $145.1 million.

“Operation Mekong,” a Chinese-Hong Kong action epic about a group of narcotics officers’ efforts to fight a murderous drug gang, picked up second place, earning $26.5 million to push its worldwide total to $97.5 million.

“The Girl on the Train” topped domestic charts, opening to $24.7 million. But the adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ literary sensation had to settle for third place on the foreign charts, where it kicked off to $16.5 million from 20 territories, to push its worldwide haul to $41.2 million. The film centers on an alcoholic woman (Emily Blunt), whose obsession with her ex-husband gets her entangled in a mysterious disappearance. Universal is distributing the film as part of its partnership with Amblin.

“I Belonged to You,” a Chinese romantic comedy, nabbed fourth place, earning $12.2 million, and pushing its gross to $94.6 million.

“Bridget Jones’s Baby” rounded out the top five, earning $11.3 million. The latest chapter in the ongoing saga of the gaffe-prone Englishwoman’s romantic foibles got a cold shoulder in the U.S., but has been bolstered by foreign crowds. It has earned a healthy $143.4 million during its run.

In milestone news, Disney’s “Finding Dory” became the second Pixar release to cross the $1 billion mark, joining “Toy Story 3” in the nine-zero club.
