It introduces newcomer Devon Terrell as a young Obama, known to his friends as Barry, who is seen strolling through New York City. The footage is accompanied by text which reads, "Before he gave hope, before he created change, before he made us believe we can, he was Barry." Directed by Vikram Gandhi from a script by Adam Mansbach, the upcoming biopic premieres on Netflix on December 16. It follows a young Barack Obama who arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, he finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates.
