Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" tops foreign box office

PanARMENIAN.Net - "Boo! A Madea Halloween" scares off other competitors at North American box office. Tyler Perry's comedy horror flick easily debuts in the first place with approximately $27.6 million, beating Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" which lands in the runner-up spot in its first week with an estimated $23 million, AceShowbiz reports.

"The star power of Madea and Tyler Perry is undeniable," says senior media analyst for comScore Paul Dergarabedian. "It's perfectly timed and perfectly themed and it just paid off. Tom Cruise is used to being No. 1, but in this case, 'Madea' was a very formidable competitor."

However, "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" manages to rule worldwide box office by earning $54 million globally. "He's a true international box-office star. There aren't very many of those," says senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations Jeff Bock. "It's the overseas box office that really will put this into trilogy land."

Also making its debut is "Ouija: Origin of Evil". The "Ouija" prequel opens in the third place with an estimated $14.1 million even though audiences gave it a middling C. Dergarabedian says that "it's another horror movie" which has done very well after "The Conjuring 2", "Lights Out", "Don't Breathe" and "The Purge: Election Year".

Another newcomer this week is "Keeping Up with the Joneses". The comedy movie starring Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher and Zach Galifianakis, which got a B- on CinemaScore, fails to cover its budget of $40 million by earning an estimated $5.6 million in the seventh place.

"It felt like the wrong film at the wrong time," says Bock. "The action-comedy caper is a tough genre to pull off. Unless you have the chemistry like 'Mr and Mrs Smith', it's almost impossible to make your money back."

Meanwhile, the rest of the top 5 see holdovers. Last week's champion, "The Accountant", and "The Girl on the Train (2016)" drop three slots to the fourth and fifth place respectively. Ben Affleck's movie is estimated to earn $14 million, while Emily Blunt's psychological thriller collects approximately $7.3 million.
