Iran takes credit for helping establish first ceasefire in Karabakh

PanARMENIAN.Net - First ceasefire in Nagorno Karabakh was established through Iran's efforts, a spokesman for the Islamic Republic's Foreign Ministry told reporters Monday, October 24, a local media outlet says.

As Tasnim reports, Bahram Ghasemi said Iran was the first country to conduct a mediation mission in the Karabakh conflict resolution.

"We have played a major role, managing to reach a ceasefire there," Ghasemi said.

Commenting on President Hassan Rouhani's upcoming visit to Armenia, the spokesman hailed relations between the two countries, expressing hope that the visit will take place "in the nearest future."

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
