HBO picks up Ariel Winograd’s “That’s Not Cheating”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Ariel Winograd’s “That’s Not Cheating” has closed a U.S. rights deal with HBO Latino. Pic was co-produced by Disney-backed Patagonia in Argentina, Variety reports.

Buena Vista Intl. has acquired rights to Latin America. In the latest deals closed or now announced at the American Film Market by sales agent FilmSharks Intl., Movistar Plus has acquired Spanish pay TV rights, Delta has clinched Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, Andes Film has bought rights to Chile, and Medyavision has nabbed Turkish rights. Rights for France, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and Germany are in advanced discussions, FilmSharks Intl.’s founder Guido Rud said at the AFM.

A remake rights deal is also on the table for several versions with a U.S. studio and will be announced soon, he added.

“That’s Not Cheating” is also produced by Nathalie Cabiron’s Tres Planos Cine, whose credits include “The Bottom of the Sea,” the feature debut of “Wild Tale’s” Damian Szifron, and by DirecTV, which has pay TV and VOD rights for South America to the pic.

Pic follows Camila and Mateo, a modern couple who joke with friends over dinner about a “one-night pass” — one night of hot love with a famous person that wouldn’t be considered cheating. Then Mateo meets his one-night pass. Winograd’s follow-up to hit “No Kids,” “That’s Not Cheating” has grossed $1.8 million for Disney in Argentina. It has notched up 350,000 admissions in South America, Rud said.

It is the latest in a line of high-concept Argentine comedies of manners with international potential.
