“Big Bang Theory” spin-off centering on Sheldon in development at CBS

PanARMENIAN.Net - CBS is looking to expand its hit comedy series. The network is developing a spin-off of "The Big Bang Theory" about the young and potentially teenage version of Sheldon Cooper, which is portrayed by Emmy winner Jim Parsons on the sitcom, AceShowbiz said.

"Big Bang" co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady will executive produce the prequel series, with Steve Molaro overseeing the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, none of the original series' cast is involved in the spin-off outside of Parsons, who is attached as executive producer.

The prequel is described as "Malcolm in the Middle" but with a young Sheldon at the center of the story. Other details are not available as the project is still in early stages of planning. CBS and Warner Bros. Television refused to comment.

In its 10th season, "Big Bang" is the No. 1 comedy series in primetime, averaging more than 19 million total viewers and a 5.8 in the coveted 18-49 demo last season. The show hasn't been renewed for a new season, but the key cast members, including Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, are currently negotiating new deals for a likely 11th season and beyond.
