iPhone 8 to offer OLED display?

Apple may sit atop the smartphone tree, but the iPhone 7 didn't exactly provide customers with a much-needed overhaul. That's something the company will reportedly look to change in next year's update, and a vital clue pointing to this may have just been uncovered, Digital Spy reveals.

After deep-diving into the Cupertino giant's most recent Securities and Exchange Commission 10-K filing, multinational banking company JP Morgan came across a purchase order for what may be OLED panels. The order extends for an entire year, and is valued at around $4 billion.

The Cupertino giant has long been expected to offer an iPhone with OLED display - the same as rivals Samsung - and the iPhone 8 could be the perfect opportunity to finally unveil the change, Digital Spy said.

As AppleInsider notes, this uncovered order coincides with an "off-balance sheet obligation" for the same amount from Q3, which could be related to Apple sourcing panels from Sammy itself.

But while some signs point to the South Korean company providing screens to its rival, it's also likely it isn't the only supplier. After all, Sharp's CEO recently revealed that Apple is shifting to OLED screens, while Japan Display has also confirmed plans to move to OLED mass production.

But what are the benefits of such a move?

Well, despite Apple always opting to roll out LCD screens with the iPhone, OLED is widely considered to be the better option. The latter allows for pixels to emit individual light, leading to improved efficiency, while also offering stronger shades of dark colours.

Despite all this, it's important to remember that we still sit almost a year away from anything being official, so make sure to season any rumours with salt, Digital Spy said.
