“Kim & Kim” interstellar bounty hunters cult comic getting a sequel

PanARMENIAN.Net - Kim & Kim, the cult comic centering on trans and queer interstellar bounty hunter girls from Black Mask Studios, is getting a sequel, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

The second volume of the comic is part of Black Mask’s freshly inked three-book deal with Magdalene Visaggio, the trans woman author who is giving voice to LGBT characters in the indie comic scene.

The first comic out of the deal will be Quantum Teens Are Go, a high-octane crime adventure drawn by Eryk Donovan (Constantine). Quantum Teens will follow two teenage sweethearts who spend their nights breaking into abandoned super-labs and stealing gear to try and build a time machine. The book is eyeing a February release.

The second volume of Kim & Kim would follow Quantum Teens, with Black Mask aiming for a summer 2017 unveiling.

Kim & Kim was a sci-fi adventure about a pair of twenty-something best friends — a young queer woman and a young trans woman — trying to make a name for themselves in the wild world of interdimensional bounty hunting. Illustrated by Eva Cabrera and Claudia Aguirre, the book was written while Visaggio was undergoing her own transition.

The debut issue sold out of its initial print run of 20,000, according to the company, an impressive feat for an indie comic with an unknown creative team.

The third comic in the deal is being kept under wraps, although it is said to be a more personal project.

"I really believe Mags [Visaggio] is one of the sharpest new writers to hit comics in a while,” said Matt Pizzolo, who founded Black Mask with comic book writer Steve Niles and Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph Records CEO Brett Gurewitz. “She's bold and outspoken and unafraid which makes her voice particularly powerful, and she matches that with authentic characterization and smartly composed storytelling. And most of all her books are fun."

Black Mask was founded in 2013 with a strong focus on new talent and distinct voices. Among its titles are Black, Young Terrorists and Sinatoro, the latter written by comics icon Grant Morrison. Many of its offerings are in development with media companies and filmmakers for adaptation.
