Armenia score declines in Global Terrorism Index

PanARMENIAN.Net - 76 countries have improved their scores in the Global Terrorism Index 2016, while those of 53 others, including Armenia, have deteriorated.

The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) is a comprehensive study analysing the impact of terrorism for 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world’s population. This is the fourth edition of the Global Terrorism Index which provides a comprehensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism over the last 16 years, covering the period from the beginning of 2000 to the end of 2015.

With a score of 0,288 - where 10 indicates the highest impact of terrorism, and 0 means no impact at all - Armenia was placed the 108th, down by 8 positions against last year's 116th spot, when it had a score of 0,115.

Georgia (87th spot), Azerbaijan (106th), Iran (47th), Turkey (14th), Russia (30th) and the United States (36th) are all placed below Armenia, while North Korea, Slovakia, Lithuania and Switzerland are among those with no impact of terrorism.

The five countries with the highest impact from terrorism as measured by the GTI are Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria, which accounted for 72% of all deaths from terrorism in 2015.

Also, the report said the global economic impact of terrorism reached $89.6 billion in 2015, decreasing by 15% from its 2014 level.

Armenia took the 110th spot among 162 countries worldwide in the 2016 Global Peace Index, published in June by the Institute for Economics and Peace. The Institute suggested then that the country's national cost of violence stood at about $1,5 billion in the last year.
