Google to generate 100% of its own energy in 2017

PanARMENIAN.Net - Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Google will generate all its energy needs from renewable energy by next year. In a post on its website, the Mountain View company stated that it has already purchased 2.6 gigawatts of renewable energy till date from wind and solar energy producers. It plans to ramp up this spending and create new energy from renewable resources for projects funded from its purchases, Investopedia reports.

Google is the largest purchaser of renewable energy in corporate America by a wide margin. According to a Bloomberg report earlier this year, the company’s activity amounts to “almost 26 percent” of the total capacity built by the 350 top-ranked purchasers of renewable energy. Google has inked long term agreements with providers of renewable energy, also known as “Power Purchase Agreements”, since 2010.

Not all the renewable energy providers supply directly to Google. Instead, these agreements are meant to offset Google’s power consumption from the utility grid, which mostly generates power from conventional energy sources, such as coal and petroleum. They also help bring down costs for renewable energy. Google’s promise of guaranteed purchases also helps producers of renewable energy get project financing from banks. At 5.7 terawatts, the company’s power bill is massive and Google’s move could have substantial ramifications throughout the renewable energy ecosystem.
