Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” dominates social media buzz with 1st trailer

PanARMENIAN.Net - Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic “Dunkirk” dominated social media buzz last week with an impressive 313,000 new conversations, Variety said citing media-measurement firm comScore and its PreAct service.

The Dec. 14 trailer portrayed the chaotic 1940 rescue of Allied soldiers on the French shore during one of the fiercest battles of the war with aerial bombardments, sinking ships, and a beach filled with ravaged troops. Warner Bros. also released a poster for the film on Dec. 12.

“Dunkirk” stars Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Harry Styles as well as Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, both of whom worked on Nolan’s “Dark Knight” films and “Inception.” “Dunkirk” hits theaters on July 21, 2017, when it will face off against Luc Besson’s science-fiction adventure, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.”

Fox’s drama “Hidden Figures” generated nearly 91,000 new conversations in the wake of a special White House screening on Dec. 15, hosted by Michelle Obama and featuring the leading cast members.

“Hidden Figures” stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, while Octavia Spencer portrays Dorothy Vaughan, and Janelle Monae plays Mary Jackson – brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the key scientists on the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit in 1962, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth.

The film is directed by Theodore Melfi from a screenplay by himself and Allison Schroeder, based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly.

Fox opens “Hidden Figures” in limited release on Dec. 25 and will expand into wide release on Jan. 6.

Universal’s “The Fate of the Furious” — the eighth film in the “Furious” franchise — generated more than 39,000 new coversations. The studio held a live event on Dec. 11 in Times Square featuring cast appearances to debut its promotional material.

Universal’s trailer, released on the same day, set a new record for most-watched trailer in 24 hours.

Sony’s sci-fier “Passengers,” starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, made a splash last week with more than 39,000 new conversations. The world premiere took place on Dec. 14 in Los Angeles and the film opens Dec. 21.

Universal-Illumination’s animated comedy “Sing” saw more than 32,000 new conversations last week. “Sing” also opens on Dec. 21.
