Disney Hyperion nabs fantasy YA book series “Hollow Crown”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Disney has won the publishing rights at auction for Hollow Crown, a new YA fantasy series from author Zoraida Córdova in collaboration with Glasstown Entertainment, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Sources say there were multiple bids for the publishing rights for the Spanish-influenced duology that sold in a major six-figure deal to senior editor Laura Schreiber at Disney Hyperion. The deal was for North American rights to two books, with the first set to be published in summer 2019.

The story is set in the Kingdom of Selvina, where the royal family has set out to destroy magic through a grand and terrible inquisition. And Renata, a thief trained in the art of stealing memories, is exacting revenge against the royal family. But when a mission goes awry and her first love, Dez, is captured, Ren herself must kill the leader of the King’s Justice, Prince Castian — only to discover through powerful memories that Prince Castian may be the greatest illusion of them all … and that the fate of all magic now lies in her hands.

The project is loosely based on the Spain of the 15th century, reimagining the Inquisition as a battle between a cruel, autocratic state and rebel magicians. Stephen Barbara at InkWell Management negotiated the deal on behalf of Glasstown and Córdova. U.K., audio and foreign submissions have also begun with offers pending.

"Zoraida has the rare ability to write an action-filled adventure with deep emotional resonance and compassion,” said Glasstown Entertainment editor Kamilla Benko. “Her words sizzle.”

Paramount recently picked up the film rights to Córdova's previous book, Labyrinth Lost. She is a member of Latinx in Kidlit, and is a contributing writer to Bustle Books and the B&N Teen Blog.

Recent sales for Glasstown Entertainment include Bonfire, a literary thriller by actress Krysten Ritter, and The Hunger, an elevated historical horror novel by Alma Katsu, which is currently in development for a feature film with Scott Free Productions and 20th Century Fox.
