Makunts confirms she could be named Armenia's Ambassador to U.S.

PanARMENIAN.Net - The head of the ruling My Step parliamentary bloc, Lilit Makunts, has confirmed that the issue of her appointment as the Armenian Ambassador to the United States is on the agenda, while adding that no final decision has been reached yet.

In an interview with the Armenian Service of RFE/RL on Sunday, January 24, Makunts said the issue is under discussion.

While critics say the lawmaker does not have sufficient experience in diplomatic work for such an appointment, Makunts herself said "in some cases" such experience does not play a "priority role."

"Throughout the world, including in the Republic of Armenia, ambassadors are appointed both diplomatically and politically. There are no restrictions on political appointments. As for my experience, I think it has been public within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy. Experience is, of course, extremely important, but in some cases it does not play a priority role," she said.
