Armenian, Russian Foreign Ministers meet in Moscow

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian and Russian Foreign Ministers Ara Aivazian and Sergei Lavrov met in Moscow on Wednesday, February 17 to discuss bilateral relations and the aftermath of the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Foreign Ministers stressed the high level of allied cooperation between Armenia and Russia, both bilaterally and internationally, within the framework of regional security and integration formats.

Aivazian and Lavrov weighed in on regional security and stability, with the former stressing the urgent repatriation of the Armenian prisoners of war and captives, noting that the artificial delay of the issue by Azerbaijan poses serious obstacles to the implementation of trilateral statements

The Armenian foreign policy chief also said he greatly values the Russian side's efforts at alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Artsakh (Karabakh).

Several dozen Armenian POWs returned from Azerbaijan in mid-December, although Armenian officials said many more people were being held in Baku. Dozens of others, both servicemen and civilians, have been captured after the completion of military hostilities. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said in one of his speeches that the newly detained persons are not prisoners of war but “terrorists”. Human rights lawyer Siranush Sahakyan has said, meanwhile, that at least 120 Armenian prisoners of war are being held in Azerbaijan. Sahakyan represents the rights of some of the Karabakh POWs before the European Court of Human Rights. The lawyer said there is enough evidence proving the capture of said persons, which the Armenian side will submit to international agencies and courts.
