Armenia responds to Russia: Azerbaijan must withdraw

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijani troops must withdraw from Armenia's sovereign territory before the sides can begin to work on the demarcation and delimitation of borders, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said on Wednesday, May 19.

Grigoryan's comments came in response to Russia’s offer to assist Baku and Yerevan in the delimitation and demarcation work, as a way of resolving the situation on the border.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).

“We greatly appreciate the Russian side’s efforts for contributing to the resolution of the situation, by expressing readiness to continue close cooperation, at the same time we underscore that the complete preservation of territorial integrity cannot be subject for discussion for the Republic of Armenia," he said, according to Armenpress.

"We note that the Azerbaijani side’s latest actions are explicitly aimed at not implementing its own obligations assumed under the 2020 November 9 and 2021 January 11 statements by the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan."
