Possible scenarios for resolving border situation discussed in Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Acting Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutyunyan and Commander of Russian Peacekeeping contingent in Karabakh Rustam Muradov have discussed possible scenarios for resolving the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Defense Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, May 25.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).

The two weighed in on the situation amid Azerbaijan's ongoing provocations and the steps taken by the Armenian side. Harutyunyan maintained that encroachment on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia is "absolutely unacceptable", and that the Defense Ministry's position is clear։ "The members of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces must return to their original positions without preconditions."

Harutyunyan and Muradov also discussed the Russian peacekeeping mission in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Peacekeepers were deployed along the new line of contact in Artsakh (Karabakh) after the completion of military hostilities in November 2020.
