Russia comments on Aliyev's "Zangezur" corridor remarks

Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexey Zaitsev has weighed in on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's comments about the so-called "Zangezur Corridor", Novosti Armenia reports.

The Azerbaijani side has on multiple occasions spoken about a so-called "corridor" through the southern Armenian province of Syunik that would connect Nakhijevan to the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side, however, has repeatedly denied being involved in negotiations for the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, stressing that they have only agreed to unblock transport communications in the region.

Aliyev said recently that the Second Karabakh War in late 2020 showed "what happens when our patience runs out, so we give Armenia the opportunity to fulfill all the conditions of the November 10 statement."

Zaitsev told reporters on Thursday, September 30 that "despite the media's interest in hot topics or statements, it is nevertheless obvious that coverage of exclusively confrontational stories does not help in overcoming existing differences."

Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. Since then, almost a dozen Armenian servicemen have been killed in Azerbaijan’s shooting, a dozen others have been wounde.
