Nephew of Catholicos Karekin II arrested for one month

PanARMENIAN.Net - Hambardzum Nersisyan, nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, has been placed in custody for one month, according to Armenia’s Investigative Committee, as reported by 1Lurer.am .

Earlier it was revealed that Gevorg Nersisyan, Garegin II’s brother, had also been arrested.

The Investigative Committee had petitioned the Court of First Instance of general jurisdiction in Armenia’s Armavir Province to apply detention as a preventive measure against Gevorg Nersisyan and his son Hambardzum Nersisyan.

According to a prior announcement by the Committee, public criminal prosecution was launched during the preliminary investigation against the two individuals under Article 211 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to coercing or obstructing campaigning or forcing refusal to engage in campaigning. Their arrests are based on these allegations.

In a Facebook post, Harutyun Mkrtchyan, a candidate from the Republic party running in the enlarged Vagharshapat community, claimed: “On November 1, around 16:10, Gevorg Nersisyan and his sons obstructed the campaign activities of my political team in the village of Voskehat.” Lawyer Ara Zohrabyan dismissed the accusation as false reporting.
