Armenian Ministry calls Turkish article on Constitution fake

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia’s Ministry of Justice has dismissed as “entirely false” a recent article by Turkish media outlet Oda TV regarding the draft of a new Armenian Constitution.

Responding to the publication, the ministry emphasized that the report is a complete fabrication and bears no relation to the reality of the constitutional reform process. The article in question had claimed that a “historic decision” was being made and that “the Armenian people” were being removed from the Constitution.

“Without addressing each point raised in the article, we state that the publication regarding the new Constitution is completely false and misrepresents the potential amendments. The presented information entirely distorts the scope and direction of the proposed changes,” the ministry said.

The Justice Ministry reiterated that the entire process of constitutional reform is being led by a Constitutional Reform Council composed of representatives from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, as well as from extra-parliamentary forces and civil society organizations. The council is chaired by Minister of Justice Grigor Minasyan.

Working systematically and thoroughly, the council is reviewing every chapter of the Constitution, with the goal of ensuring that all proposed amendments are well-grounded, professionally vetted, and inclusive of diverse social and political perspectives.

The ministry noted that the council’s discussions and decisions do not yet constitute the final text of a new Constitution. Any changes will only be enacted through a public referendum, reinforcing the democratic principle that the final decision rests with the people.

“Citizens are urged to rely solely on official statements released by the Ministry of Justice. The constitutional reform process is transparent and subject to public scrutiny,” the statement read.

The ministry added that the new draft Constitution will be put to a referendum following the national elections.

Earlier, Minister Grigor Minasyan stated that the new constitutional draft is expected to be ready by March.
