Armenian director showcases local fashion at Oscars![]() March 16, 2026 - 19:13 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian-American film director Madeline Sharafian appeared on the red carpet of the Academy Awards wearing a dress by Armenian designer Varduhi Torosyan’s Jocund brand, Radar Armenia reported. Sharafian, the first Armenian director to create a feature-length animated film at Pixar, has been nominated for an Oscar for the second time. She co-directed the animated film “Elio” with Domee Shi and Adrian Molina. As a result, Sharafian became the first Armenian and the third female director in Pixar’s history to direct a feature-length film. The collaboration also reflects the core idea of the Rien-à-Porter platform — the principle that “local is the new luxury.” The platform presents Armenian cultural heritage and contemporary design by collaborating with selected Armenian designers and showcasing their work both online and at its main space located at 35 Pushkin Street in Yerevan. According to Torosyan, the dress not only highlights Sharafian’s appearance but also reflects the values and vision she represents as a creator. With this appearance, Armenian cinema, fashion and cultural creativity were brought together on the Oscars stage, presenting Armenian design on one of the world’s most prominent platforms. At the 98th Academy Awards, the film “Sinners” ranked second in the number of awards with four Oscars. One of its producers is Armenian-American Sev Ohanian. The horror film “Sinners” set a record with 16 nominations. It won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, while Michael B. Jordan, who starred in the film, was named Best Actor of the year. Ara Aivazian said Azerbaijan continues the traditions of Turkey after seizing territories and forced Armenians out. The creative crew of the Public TV had chosen 13-year-old Malena as a participant of this year's contest. She called on others to also suspend their accounts over the companies’ failure to tackle hate speech. Penderecki was known for his film scores, including for William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist”, Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”. Partner news |
