No handwriting examination has been conducted on a document attributed to Archbishop Bagrat in the case related to the Sacred Struggle movement, lawyer Hovhannes Khudoyan said, commenting on claims about an alleged “terrorism plan” written by him, Sputnik Armenia reports.
“I am sharing a document that the head of Armenia’s Investigative Committee had described as a terrorism plan written by Archbishop Bagrat. Initially, when images of metal rods were being published, the prime minister and the head of the Investigative Committee were presenting various claims to the public, but there was no document. We voiced criticism toward high-ranking law enforcement officials, after which they published a document allegedly written by Archbishop Bagrat. I would like to note that such claims must be supported by solid evidence, and at the very least a forensic handwriting examination should have been conducted. No such examination has ever been ordered,” Khudoyan said.
According to him, any material written by Archbishop Bagrat can be compared with the published document, and even a non-specialist could see that it does not match his handwriting.
Another defense lawyer, Tatevik Soghoyan, said the document is written in English and that they deliberately did not translate it to preserve both the handwriting and the content’s perception.
“It mentions geopolitical actors that were supposedly to be involved in the process, such as Russia, Belarus, Iran, China, India, Cyprus, and Spain. In one section, it states that they were to infiltrate an enemy country and take 150,000–200,000 civilians hostage. We want to demonstrate the absurdity of the content of such documents, which were allegedly found during a search at Archbishop Bagrat’s residence. During a search,” Soghoyan said.
She added that during the Sacred Struggle movement, when they traveled across Armenia’s regions, many citizens approached Archbishop Bagrat and handed him various written proposals outlining their own ideas for solutions, which were simply collected and stored.
According to the Investigative Committee, participants and leaders of the Sacred Struggle movement had planned to carry out terrorist acts and seize power in Armenia.
