Republican Party of Armenia calls election illegitimate![]() June 8, 2026 - 19:04 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The Republican Party of Armenia has stated that it considers the June 7 parliamentary elections illegitimate. The announcement was made by party chairman Gurgen Simonyan on his Facebook page. “We consider the June 7 elections illegitimate and are opening all possible avenues of political struggle to ensure the people's power and to defend the sovereignty, territorial integrity, statehood, and constitutional foundations of the Republic of Armenia,” he wrote. Simonyan also thanked citizens who voted for the party in the parliamentary elections, describing the result as a significant achievement for a political force that has existed for only one year. “Unfortunately, several more years have been taken from us through the reproduction of a parliament that essentially mirrors the previous one, depriving a pro-Western force of representation in parliament. God grant that only time has been taken from us, and not our identity, homeland, or freedom. To achieve this outcome, the entire arsenal of the old, fading political system, both administrative and private, was deployed, accompanied by what I describe as a hidden pro-Turkish and pro-Russian column, as well as bloggers and self-styled analysts serving various interests, who spared no effort in attempting to associate me with former and current authorities, their affiliated forces, Russia, other countries, and grant-seeking groups. It should be noted that, contrary to the pro-European expectations of Armenia’s civil society, the 9th National Assembly will be composed exclusively of pro-Russian political forces, including the force that celebrated victory before the election results were finalized. A difficult path lies ahead. Join us, dear friends, so that together we may grow stronger and more resilient. Remain strong in spirit, stand firm before the challenges of time like Mount Ararat. Our struggle is only beginning. Everything still lies ahead,” the statement said. The party indicated that it intends to continue its political activities and opposition efforts following the election. According to the preliminary results of the June 7 National Assembly elections, the vote distribution was as follows: Civil Contract — 49.825%, Strong Armenia — 23.281%, Armenia Alliance — 9.934%, and Prosperous Armenia — 3.996%. Under these updated figures, the Prosperous Armenia Party does not clear the 4% electoral threshold required for parliamentary representation. Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution. President of the Armenian parliament Alen Simonyan met with the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova. Partner news |
