EU welcomes parliamentary election participation![]() June 9, 2026 - 13:32 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The European Union has congratulated the citizens of Armenia on exercising their sovereign democratic right in the parliamentary elections and commended the high level of civic participation. The statement was issued on behalf of the EU by High Representative Kaja Kallas regarding the parliamentary elections held in Armenia on June 7. According to the statement, the vote demonstrates Armenia’s strong commitment to democracy, peace, expanded regional cooperation, and closer ties with Europe, Factor.am reported. The statement notes that, according to the preliminary assessment of the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission, although the campaign was highly polarized, the elections were conducted in an inclusive manner, voters were presented with clear political choices, and the entire process was carried out in a well-organized way under a solid legal framework. “The campaign and voting took place in the context of unprecedented interference, pressure, and continuous hybrid attacks by Russia, including measures of economic coercion aimed at undermining the democratic process and fueling polarization. Nevertheless, the elections reflect Armenia’s democratic resilience and progress on its reform path. They also highlighted the Armenian people’s commitment to European values, peaceful political participation, and the pursuit of a stable, secure, and prosperous future,” the statement said. The EU also drew attention to the preliminary results released by Armenia’s electoral authorities, according to which Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party holds a clear lead. “We call on all political actors to respect the election results, democratic procedures, and to use legal mechanisms to address any electoral complaints,” the statement emphasized. The document also notes that the European Union continues to provide strong support to Armenia and its citizens, remaining committed to supporting the country’s democratic development and further deepening bilateral partnership. “We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with Armenia’s future government and parliament in implementing their comprehensive reform agenda, promoting regional peace, economic growth, and connectivity, with the goal of strengthening Armenia’s sovereignty, resilience, democracy, and prosperity,” the statement said. According to preliminary results of Armenia’s June 7 National Assembly elections, the vote distribution was as follows: Civil Contract – 49.825%, Strong Armenia – 23.281%, Hayastan Alliance – 9.934%, Prosperous Armenia – 3.996%. Under these updated figures, Prosperous Armenia has not cleared the 4% threshold required for political parties. The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, have arrived in Washington. The CSTO budget for the current year requires adjustments due to the refusal of Yerevan to pay their share of contributions. Six total incidents have burned 19 old-growth trees. Friday night 8 trees were torched along the beautiful main entrance. The EU does not intend to conduct military exercises with Armenia, Lead Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano says. Partner news |
