Yerevan residents protest St. Anna Church constructionMay 14, 2011 - 11:26 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - People gathered in the center of Yerevan on May 13 to protest construction of St. Anna Church in the vicinity of St. Katoghike or Holy Mother of God Church. The protest was kicked off by a man who was holding a sheet reading “I am against illegal construction”. The others joined him later, including passers by. “One individual can give a start to a large-scale protest,” an activist told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. According to the initiators, the abuilding church does not fit in the architecture of the area. St. Katoghike Church was built in the 13th century. After the devastating earthquake in 1679 only a chapel remained. A basilica was attached to it at the end of the 17th century. Later, three clay jars were dug out in the territory. However, the archeological findings did not help stop the construction of another church on the spot.
