Young Armenian chess players improve rankings

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian U16 chess team consisting of Karen Grigoryan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Tigran Harutyunyan, Arman Melikyan, Zohrak Apresyan finished second at the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad that was held in Izmit, Turkey from October 24-31.

In a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, chess players said they showed 100 per cent results at the beginning of the Olympiad.

“Unfortunately, both Karen and I suffered a defeat in Armenia-Kazakhstan decisive game. The last round victory over Kyrgyzstan rendered no success, as Russians were 1,5 point ahead of us,” Gabuzyan said.

According to Grigoryan, even if Armenia and Russia had the same number of points, this would not bring a victory because Russians were leading by additional results. “This year our team comprised 3 new members who despite absence of experience of participating in international tournaments tried hard to gain points,” he said.

Grigoryan and Gabuzyan won individual gold and bronze medals respectively, improving their rankings.
