MP: full shift to proportional system won’t secure fair vote

PanARMENIAN.Net - Prosperous Armenia coalition party member Vardan Bostanjyan, commenting on opposition’s demand on full shift to proportional electoral system, noted that the party program stresses the need for full shift, expressing hope for the parliamentary hearings to shed light on the effectiveness of the step.

The MP further noted that he doesn’t believe the issue as the only tool to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

In response to reproaches cast against Prosperous Armenia, Mr. Bostanjyan cited the problem not being that acute behind the party’s silence during adoption of a new Electoral Code in 2011.

Armenian National Assembly includes 131 parliamentarians, with 41 MPs elected through majority system; 90 MPs - through proportional system.

On December 27, Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun opposition parties issued a joint statement urging for a full shift to proportional electoral system.

On January 26, Prosperous Armenia coalition party jointly with Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun opposition parties requested Armenian National Assembly speaker Samvel Nikoyan and Chairman of NA standing committee on state and legal affairs David Harutyunyan to organize parliamentary hearings on full shift to proportional electoral system.
