IOC vice president Mario Pescante resigns![]() February 22, 2012 - 11:08 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Mario Pescante is resigning as a vice president of the International Olympic Committee following the Italian government's refusal to back Rome's bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Rome's bid was withdrawn last week after Premier Mario Monti refused to provide the required government financial guarantees at a time of economic crisis in Italy. Pescante, a longtime power broker in Italy's sports establishment, was the leader of the Rome bid. He said he ''feels a bit embarrassed to be representing a country which has thrown in the towel early.'' Despite his resignation as IOC vice president, Pescante will remain a regular IOC member from Italy, The Associated Press reported. Abraham has won 2 straight after losing 3 bouts in the Super Six tournament; Stieglitz has gone undefeated since 2008. The IOC will decide which city will host the 2020 Olympics in a final vote on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires. From June 3-7, it will go to Northern Ireland and then the Republic of Ireland - the only country outside UK on the torch route. Beckham is acting as a special ambassador for the games and was involved in promoting London's bid to host it. |
