PACE SET TERM FOR SETTLING DOMESTIC SITUATION IN ARMENIA

PanARMENIAN.Net - Before September this year Armenia has to take every measure to settle the domestic situation in the country, says a special resolution, passed at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) session last evening, where the situation in Armenia was discussed. According to the document, within the coming 5 months the Armenian authorities specifically have to provide for unimpeded holding of rallies and processions, create normal conditions for media activities, especially accentuating the matter of providing broadcast opportunities to A1+ opposition TV channel, release opposition activists detained, not to pose obstacles to population movement within the country territory, etc. The PACE also called to hold a rapid and transparent investigation of violation of human rights, which occurred in Armenia lately. Within that period the European parliamentarians bound the Armenian leadership to constantly keep them informed on the measures undertaken to fulfill the demands presented. Besides, the PACE called the Armenian authorities to present a return on the work done to restore law in the country. In case there is no progress, the membership of the Armenian delegation in the PACE may be ceased in September, the document runs. As of the demands of the Armenian opposition to hold a referendum of confidence to the current authorities, the PACE reminded that in spite of the gerrymander during the presidential and parliamentary election in 2003, their returns were not doubted. Besides, the European parliamentarians never managed to determine whether the item in the April 16 resolution of the Constitutional Court of Armenia on holding a referendum was a decision or mere recommendation. At the same time, the PACE called the opposition of Armenia to act within the framework of the Constitution and to avoid violence.
