Sergei Shakaryants: extension of Russian base deployment terms in Armenia senseless

PanARMENIAN.Net - The main goal of Russian President’s visit to Armenia is to smooth the situation which emerged after reports about possible sale of Russian S-300 to Azerbaijan, an Armenian expert said.

“Medvedev’s visit will hardly bring Armenian-Russian relations to a new level,” Sergei Shakaryants told a news conference on August 19.

As to extension of Russian military base deployment terms, he said it “was a senseless move”.

“Russian base is more a strategic than military facility, which serves as a warning to forces wishing to use South Caucasus as a platform to attack Iran,” the expert said.
