Hayk Demoyan: Safarov cannot be extradited to Azerbaijan without the knowledge of Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Ramil Safarov cannot be extradited, despite the agreement on extradition between Azerbaijan and Hungary, said Hayk Demoyan, Armenian Defence Ministry representative at 2006 trial.

“Hungary should inform Armenia of the step, should it decide to undertake it. However, the severity of the crime and absence of mitigating circumstances rules out the possibility of Safarov’s extradition,” Demoyan stressed.

According to the vice president of the International Lawyers Union Ilham Rahimov, the issue of Ramil Safarov’s extradition to Azerbaijan was discussed during his visit to Hungary.

Rahimov met Safarov in prison in Hungary, news.az reported.

On February 19, 2004, Azerbaijani army officer Ramil Safarov axed to death Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest during a NATO language course. On April 13, 2006, the first court instance of Budapest sentenced Safarov to life in prison. The appeal against the verdict was not met.
