According to Vahram Mkrtchyan, the authorities came to senses after the incident with former Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan. Commenting on President Serzh Sargsyan’s statement during the anniversary meeting of the Republican Party of Armenia, Mkrtchyan said the presidential speech contained nothing new. “Similar statements were made in 2008 but nothing has changed since then. I hope that this time these were not mere words,” Mkrtchyan said. For his part, chairman of the youth wing of the Union, Hayk Konjoryan, noted that majority of students are against the amendments to the law on language recently adopted by the Armenian parliament.
