NSS refutes reports on Armenian citizen’s recruitment in IS

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia's National Security Service on Wednesday, April 27 refuted the Combating Terrorism Center's report on an Armenian citizen who had allegedly joined the Islamic State group during 2013 and 2014.

“According to some 2013-2015 media publications in Arabian news outlets and social media networks, a IS fighter named Yeghishe Karapetyan was killed during military operation in the suburbs of Aleppo,” the NSS told PanARMENIAN.Net

“Inspections revealed, however, that the information is a mere provocation and is completely false.”

1 Armenian citizen was among the estimated 15,000 new recruits who joined the Islamic State during 2013 and 2014, a report from the Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) said earlier.

According to the fighter records by residence response, however, none of the new recruits resided in Armenia.

Besides, 107 citizens of Azerbaijan, 212 citizens of Turkey, 10 from Iran and 2 Georgian citizens have joined the jihadist group in the reporting period according to the report.
