Armenia ranks 102nd on World Economic Forum’s gender gap list

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia has come 102nd — sandwiched between Hungary and Brunei — in the latest World Economic Forum annual report on gender-based disparities around the world.

The WEF's Global Gender Gap Report 2016 measures differences between men and women in economics, education, health and political empowerment among 144 countries.

Based on the WEF’s wage equality survey, Armenia is the world’s 50th country with an overall score of 4.77 (where 1 = Not at all, significantly below those of men; 7 = Fully, equal to those of men).

Armenia still records the second-lowest female-to-male sex ratio at birth in the world, just above China’s.

Women in parliament index reveals that 11% are women, and that of Women in ministerial positions in the country records the same percentage (women-11%, men-89%).

Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden are the top four countries on the report.

Azerbaijan is ranked the 86th, followed by Georgia in the 90th spot, Turkey in the 130th, and Iran in the 139th.

The U.S. and Russia placed 45th and 75th, respectively, while Yemen comes in last in the index. The WEF says no country has fully closed its gender gap.

The WEF said progress toward gender economic equality has slowed. The gap is now at 59%, and at this rate, it will take women until 2186 to achieve full equality.
